Antioxidants are Good and Free Radicals are Bad? Think Again

Most people today have been educated in the health field to understand that anti-oxidants are good and the more you have the healthier you will be and the longer you might live, right? No, not all the time. Researchers at McGill University have found that free radicals actually increase longevity.

What did the researcher find that is the key to aging more slowly and living longer? Well the winner was not antioxidants. What was found was how free radicals promote longevity. It was found that free radicals or oxidants let the cell know to self destruct.This programmed cell death, or apoptosis which is the scientific term, is a process by that causes damaged cells to kill themselves.  Why would a cell want to kill itself?  Well it would do this to avoid becoming cancer cell, or to avoid turning on auto-immune disease, or to kill a virus infected cell.  The researchers found that apoptosis could be triggered by free radicals, and properly timed apoptosis can increase lifespan.

The lead researcher stated that it is thought that free radicals are damaging and cause aging, but this is incorrect.  This new research has shown that free radical production increases during aging because free radicals actually counter instead of cause aging. Their research showed that as the free radicals increased it equaled a significant increased lifespan.

It is so interesting when paradym shifts occur in the world. This is when something we always thought was true turns out to be the opposite of what we thought. Pre-diabetes, diabetes almost 200% Increase

New research done at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has shown that diabetes has increased from 6 percent to 10 percent in the last twenty years and pre-diabetes went up an estimated three times higher. Current estimates of pre-diabetes range up to 30 percent in the population.

Total diabetes in African Americans increased as compared to whites (15% vs. 9%). Mexican Americans were next highest for diabetes compared to whites (12% vs. 9%).

Hemoglobin A1c is the most accurate indicator of diabetes because it looks at blood sugar levels average over the last three months. For those diagnosed with diabetes who are currently taking medications, only 52% of African Americans and 43% of Mexican Americans had HbA1c levels less than 7.0% compared with 57% of whites.

This is an outrage. Diabetes can be completely reversed with diet and lifestyle changes. In our 30 years of treating patients at Total Health Institute most every patient who has diabetes gets off their medication. How do we accomplish this?

Why is diabetes and prediabetes doubling?  Because Americans has given into to their tastebuds big time. Why is this higher in certain ethnic groups? They will blame it on their genes. That is a lie. Genes do not dictate your destiny but the environment you make around your genes dictates which genes turn on and which ones turn off and you are in control of the environment that you make. If you keep eating starches, sugars, soda pop, french fries, pizza and bread you are going to keep causing insulin to rise which make your cells insulin resistant meaning they see so much insulin they do not even respond to it anymore. This is the boy who cried wolf one too many times and then no one listened anymore. All you have to do is start cutting out the sugars and starches, start exercising every day and get to sleep between 8-9PM. Why does sleep matter? When you do not get enough premidnight sleep you stress your system and this causes the stress hormones to be secreted and these cause your blood sugar to rise getting ready to run away from a tiger.

Anti-anxiety Meds and Sleeping Pills Increases Risk of Death

Anti-anxiety medications and sleeping pills have been linked to an increased risk of death, according to new research from the University of Warwick.

The large study shows that several anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) drugs or hypnotic drugs (sleeping pills) are associated with a doubling in the risk of mortality.

The lead researcher was the professor of Psychiatry at the University of Warwick. He explained “The key message here is that we really do have to use these drugs more carefully. This builds on a growing body of evidence suggesting that their side effects are significant and dangerous. We have to do everything possible to minimize over reliance on anxiolytics and sleeping pills.” “That’s not to say that they cannot be effective. But particularly due to their addictive potential we need to make sure that we help patients to spend as little time on them as possible and that we consider other options, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, to help them to overcome anxiety or sleep problems.”

Benzodiazepines were the most commonly prescribed drug class, including diazepam and temazepam. The study also examined the effects of two other groups of drugs; the so-called ‘Z-drugs’ and all other anxiolytic and hypnotic drugs. Many patients received more than one drug over the course of the study, and 5% received prescriptions for drugs from all three groups.

What is the key point in this research? It is NOT throw away your medication or else you will die twice as fast. Some people need to be on medication for a season until they balance the systems of their body. With that said, the season should not be their whole life. The way you get off medication of any type is get healthy. The healthier you become the less medication you will need. In the last 30 years of treating patients at Total Health Institute we have seen people come off of most all medications. We have had patients get off of 23 medications! That is right 23 medications they were taking at the same time! How did we do this? We balanced all the systems of the body and balanced the body’s chemistry and then they simply did not need these medications anymore.

This is what is necessary in patients who get healthy and are able to come off medication:

1.   They truly desire to get off the medication. They have come to the point were they hate having to depend on drugs with not only addictive qualities but also many side effects.

2.   They start on a total health program to balance their entire system instead of focusing on one part or even worst focusing on curing a disease.

3.   They never quit, stop or give up no matter how many times they fall.

4.   They are teachable, meaning they listen well and make the appropriate changes without being distracted by things of the world and when they do get off course they quickly recognize it and put a lot of energy into getting back on course.

The question everyone should be asking is NOT how do I get off these anti-anxiety meds and sleeping pills (or any medication for that matter) but instead how can I get so healthy that anxiety cannot stay and my sleep becomes natural (or my symptoms and conditions simply cannot live in my body or mind)?  This is how we have treated patients and this is how they have healed from extreme anxiety and insomnia and most other conditions.

Making Fat While You Sit- You Must Move

Over 35 percent of American adults and 17 percent of American children are considered obese, according to the latest survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Associated with diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and even certain types of cancer, obesity places a major burden on the health care system and economy. It’s usually treated through a combination of diet, nutrition, exercise, and other techniques.

To understand how obesity develops researchers at Tel Aviv University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, analyzed the accumulation of fat in the body at the cellular level. According to their findings, nutrition is not the only factor driving obesity. The mechanics of “cellular expansion” plays a primary role in fat production, they discovered. By exposing the mechanics of fat production at a cellular level, the researchers offer insight into the development of obesity.

They found that fat cells exposed to sustained, chronic pressure — such as what happens to the buttocks when you’re sitting down — experienced accelerated growth of lipid droplets, which are molecules that carry fats.Contrary to muscle and bone tissue, which get mechanically weaker with disuse, fat depots in fat cells expanded when they experienced sustained loading by as much as 50%.  

The researchers discovered that, once it accumulated lipid droplets, the structure of a cell and its mechanics changed dramatically. They were able to observe the material composition of the transforming fat cell, which became stiffer as it expanded. This stiffness alters the environment of surrounding cells by physically deforming them, pushing them to change their own shape and composition.

“When they gain mass and change their composition, expanding cells deform neighboring cells, forcing them to differentiate and expand,” said the researcher. “This proves that you’re not just what you eat. You’re also what you feel — and what you’re feeling is the pressure of increased weight and the sustained loading in the tissues of the buttocks of the couch potato.

If you can learn to control the mechanical environment of cells, you can then determine how to modulate the fat cells to produce less fat.

You have heard the phrase “if you do not move it you lose it” well with fat it is “if you do not move it you grow it”.

It is amazing how God created our body. The whole physiology is based on movement. When you stop moving you not only get fat but you get inflamed, toxic, low oxygen and get disease and die earlier. Do you think Adam and Eve were sitting much in the Garden? Of course not they were tending it. A very wise instructor I had while in college said these words and I will never forget them because he said them with such intensity, like he really had experienced the fullness of what these words mean:

“LIFE IS MOTION”.

A person who is confined to complete bed rest for two weeks will have the same bone and muscle loss as someone who has aged ten years. How can this be avoided?  By just getting up and standing. You do not even have to do any intense exercise, just letting gravity pull on those muscles and bones will prevent degeneration.

This study is just another reason to keep exercising and do not stay sitting for very long. The more you sit, the more fat you accumulate on your posterior end and not because of lack of exercise but because of the pressure of sitting.

Some may ask “what if my job is sitting at a computer for 8 hours a day?” Then all you have to do is stretch regularly while sitting and get up every couple of hours and walk to the bathroom even if you do not have to use it. Even better is to go up and down the stairs for a few minutes every 2-3 hours. Every hour would be best but your employer might not be so thrilled with your new exercise regime.

Malnutrition Leads to Antisocial Behavior

Children who are malnourished in their first few years of life are more likely to be aggressive and antisocial throughout childhood and into their late teens, says a University of Southern California study.

The 14-year study tracked more than 1,000 children on Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa. Researchers assessed the children’s nutrition at age 3.

The researchers found that malnourished children showed 41 percent greater aggression at age 8 than properly nourished children, 10 percent greater aggression and delinquency at age 11, and 51 percent greater violent and antisocial behavior at age 17.

“These are the first findings to show that malnutrition in the early postnatal years is associated with behavior problems through age 17,” study author Jianghong Liu, a postdoctoral fellow with USC’s Social Science Research Institute.

This study shows that food affects emotions and behavior. If the body does not receive the proper amount of nutrients (bioelectricity, enzymes) from living/raw uncooked plant food, the mind and emotions begin to go out of balance. It is important to note that these nutrients are not made up by taking vitamin and mineral supplements. As can be seen in the sesame seed Vitamin E study previously mentioned—a person needs God made living/raw nutrients to keep not only the body healthy but also the mind and emotions as well. How many acts of crime, violence and even war can be attributed to toxic bodies (from eating cooked, dead food) which causes toxic mind/emotions which manifests in antisocial behavior, anger and rage?

Blood Detoxification

We need to cleanse our blood through detoxification to keep it from circulating toxins, chemicals and drugs. Your life is in your blood, because without it, no life can exist for more than a few minutes. Blood is the major transportation system of your body, the highway by which all cells are nourished with oxygen, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytochemicals. Blood is also the way we get rid of waste products of cellular metabolism (endogenous toxins), and chemicals, drugs and toxins from exogenous sources. Blood carries chemical, toxins, drugs, and other harmful substances to the filtration systems of the liver and kidneys. Blood also transports WBCs, which fight off infections from bacteria, virus, fungi and parasites, and which consume abnormal cancer cells in the body.

Blood is frequently mentioned in Scripture, where it is always equated with life. Blood is the symbol of both the old and new covenants. In the old covenant, animals were sacrificed to show that this covenant was made for life; the shed blood of the animals was meant to be a payment for the sins of the people. In the new covenant, when Jesus Christ shed His blood for us, the blood served two purposes. First, it paid the price for the sin of the world for past, present, and future, because Jesus was the pure, sinless Lamb of God who truly did take away the sin of the world. Second, the shedding of Jesus’ blood established the new covenant between God and all of mankind. His shed blood means those who believe can be forgiven of their sins, because “without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.” (Hebrews 9:22)

Obviously, life—both physically and spiritually—is in the blood.

Unfortunately, many problems can arise in the blood, including:

  1. Inability to carry oxygen
  2. Inability to circulate oxygen and food to needed areas
  3. Inability to fight off bacteria, virus, fungi, parasites, and abnormal cancer cells
  4. Inability to clear or purify toxins, chemicals, and drugs

Blood’s inability to carry oxygen occurs commonly with certain mineral and vitamin deficiencies, especially iron and Vitamin B12. This causes either abnormal red blood cells (RBCs), which cannot carry oxygen properly, or a lack in production of new RBCs. An RBC’s average life span is 90 days. Abnormal RBCs can also result from various diseases, sickle cell anemia and many other anemia disorders.
Blood’s inability to circulate oxygen and food to needed areas occurs in certain diseases (like sickle cell anemia) where the RBC becomes sickle-shaped instead of spherical in shape. This causes poor blood circulation through all the small capillaries. The RBCs get caught and cause cellular hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and then cellular death.

High blood cholesterol and fat also commonly cause this. Fat and cholesterol cause coating and narrowing of blood vessels, decreasing movement of red and white blood cells along with all other vital nutrients. If you had to put a fire out, which works better: A fire hose or a garden hose? The fire hose does, because it is at least 15 times the diameter of the garden hose, allowing more water to come out. We want our blood vessels the same way—clean and with the largest diameter possible, so blood cells can move quickly and freely. The more fat we consume, the more sludging or sticking of the red and white blood cells. And the slower RBCs move, the less oxygen, food, vitamins and minerals can get to the needed cells. And the slower WBCs move, the less they can fight infection from bacteria, virus, fungi, parasites, and the less they can patrol to eat cancer cells. So, the lower the fat in the blood, the better the circulation of red and white blood cells.
A meal high in fat content causes clumping of the RBCs which, after several hours, reduces the overall oxygen supply to the body by 20 percent. It takes approximately 12 hours after the meal for blood flow to return to normal. Many people eat fat in all three meals, causing the body to continuously run on only 80 percent of the normal oxygen supply. This can cause major problems, because the ability of RBCs and WBCs to do their job has been reduced by 20 percent.

The greatest threats to blood’s vital function are:

  1. High animal fat diet
  2. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies
  3. Toxic buildup of toxins, chemicals, and drugs
  4. Diseases of the blood, often triggered by a move away from normal homeostasis (body balance), which is usually a result of toxic buildup

As you can see, good blood circulation is vital to our health. This is why a fever causes the rate of blood flow to increase exponentially. For every degree rise of body temperature, the speed of RBCs and WBCs doubles. So it is not health promoting for someone who is sick to take aspirin, Tylenol, or similar fever-reducing agents, unless the fever becomes uncontrollable with natural healing methods.

What can we do to keep our blood healthy?

  1. Change to more of a vegan diet, avoiding as much animal fat as possible. This will protect from constant blood cell sludging and a 20 percent decrease in total body circulation of essential nutrients, red and white blood cells.
  2. Get all your essential nutrients for the day, including vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acid and amino acid. These nutrients should come from your food, not from synthetic (and potentially toxic) vitamin and mineral supplements.
