The Most Precious Discovery

journeyAll of us are on this journey of life, a journey into discovery. What are we discovering? Is it a new continent? A rare archeological find? Gold or diamonds?  No, something much more precious.

A life being led by the heart instead of by the mind. Let us explain. Many times in Christopher Columbus’s journey to discover America, his mind and many around him told him that it was hopeless, that all was loss, that it was impossible to do what was in his heart to do. Does this sound familiar? You have challenges in your life everyday whether they be health, relationships, job or financial. How many times does your old nature (old mind, will and emotions) tell you just give up and quit, or beats you up when you stumble in the journey by condemning and judging you. “See, I told you that you cannot do it, so stop trying.”

It is up to you to rise to the challenge of the old mind, of the world system and discover a whole new world–a life transformed by living and acting from the heart. This is what Columbus did and his reward was the discovery of the new world. When you follow your heart no matter what the cost the old lying mind or the world system threaten you with, you discover the most precious gift of all–to live fully from the heart, obeying and following only what God puts into your heart not what the world system or the old lying mind fill your mind with. This discovery is to live every moment to the full, seeing God fully in each and every moment. This is eternal life in the moment.

The question comes up in the journey of life, “How do I know I am going in the right direction?”

The answer is found the same way Columbus found it:

  1. He knew there was a way that no one had ever found.
  2. He risked everything to follow what was in his heart.
  3. The signposts of following the heart are almost always great opposition of the system; of the mind, of the people.
  4. The discovery is made when it appears that all has been lost.

Questions to think on:

  • What has God put in your heart today?
  • What price are you willing to pay to obey it?
  • Can you see the opposition of the old mind, the world and people getting stronger the further you follow the heart?
  • When you fall, do you keep your eyes fixed on what God has put in your heart rather than the condemning, judging, critical thoughts of the old mind, the world system and people?

To make the greatest discovery the world has ever known is to follow your heart because when you do you discover what it means to die to your old self, your mind, your old nature. To follow your heart is to go to a place where your mind cannot enter; it is the place of the Spirit. Most all great discoveries in life came when everything was risked and at times it seemed like everything was lost. This is the place where only the heart can go. This is the place of victory and freedom in the journey of life; always remember that the victories you attain in this life you keep for all eternity.

The most important part of life is the journey, not the destination. It is the wilderness, not the Promised Land.

If you seek after miracles you usually will not find them. But when you follow your heart instead of your head in the journey of life, you come to realize that the miracle is the journey itself. In the journey you are transformed into God’s image and in the journey you acquire the victories that last for eternity.

If healing is your primary focus, realize that one day everyone who knows Him will be healed whether on earth or in heaven.

If money is your primary focus–realize that it is like dust in the wind because it is here today, gone tomorrow and you cannot take it with you.

If your primary focus is power and control, realize into this world we came helpless and so will we exit this world. Your only power is that which God gives you to follow what He put in your heart to breathe one more breath and walk one more step. Power to control others is no real power at all. True power is to follow your heart and touch a sick and dying world. Who do you think had more true power, Hitler or Mother Teresa?

If following what God has placed in your heart is your primary focus, then you are blessed because what you attain in that journey will NEVER be lost.

So let us all celebrate the greatest discovery, next to a covenant relationship with the Living God, a life that is led by the heart instead of the head.

Less Than 3% of US Living a Healthy Life

Less than 3 percent of Americans follow health advice to keep the weight off, exercise regularly, eat five or more servings of fruit and vegetables a day and avoid smoking, according to latest research.

Many studies show that people who eat healthily, exercise and do not smoke are far less likely to develop heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other chronic diseases.

Yet Americans find it almost impossible to take these steps, Dr. Mathew Reeves of Michigan State University and colleagues found.

Reeves and colleagues surveyed 153,000 adults as part of the U.S. government’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

  • 76 percent of those surveyed said they did not smoke.
  • 23 percent included at least five fruits and vegetables in their daily diets.
  • 22 percent exercised at least 30 minutes per day five or more times a week.
  • 40 percent maintained a healthy weight defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or less.

And only 3 percent met all four goals, Reeves found. He checked other studies to be sure he was right, and then did an informal poll of people he knew.

“They all kind of roll their eyes and go, ‘Nobody does that’,” Reeves said. “This is the problem — the social or cultural norm is not to do that, and it seems like an acceptable situation.

People are busy, live in environments more conducive to driving everywhere than walking or biking, and may lack information about the dangers of unhealthy habits, Reeves suggested.

But likely the biggest reason is that it is the “norm” to live unhealthy lives. “If most people around you are overweight, and don’t exercise and eat mostly fast food, then it’s very hard to see the need to change the way you are living,” Reeves noted.

Reeves said that research shows being healthy can add years to your life, decrease medical expenses, cut your risk of heart disease, and generally improve your quality of life.

“It really does matter that so many people are not taking the most basic steps to leading a healthy lifestyle,” he said. “We should be aware of what we are giving up.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tried to warn of the consequences of poor eating and a lack of exercise.

“I think people feel overwhelmed that they have all these healthy choices that they must take, to where they are almost at the point of saying ‘I can’t do it,”‘ said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner.

Dr. Keith & Laurie Nemec comments on Less Than 3% of the United States Living a Healthy Life

This very interesting study done at Michigan State University found that four factors make up healthy living.

  1. Not smoking
  2. Eating at least 5 fruits and vegetables.
  3. Exercising 30 minutes per day at least 5 days per week.
  4. Maintaining a weight of Body Mass Index 25 or less.

The study found only 3% of the United States population meeting all four criterions.

We have a few objections to the study and they are:

  • The study was done as a survey which means the people write down what they think they are doing rather than what is actually occurring. People tend to see themselves as they would like to be rather than how they actually are.
  • The guidelines used for vegetable and fruit consumption was five fruits and vegetables when the true recommendation is four servings of fruit, six servings of vegetable and only 9% of the American population eat this recommended quantity.
  • Only 35% of the United States is not found overweight or obese. Of this group there are more children not overweight than adults so the adult numbers of maintaining a BMI of 25 or less is at most 25% of the United States.
  • Instead of these four factors of health, there are “Seven Basic Steps to Total Health.” Which less than 0.1% of the United States population are fulfilling the 7 Basic Steps to Total Health below.
  1. Air – you must deep diaphragm breathing to oxygenate your body.
  2. Water – you must drink 32 ounces of distilled water per 50/lbs per body weight per day.
  3. Food – you consume a diet of living/raw plant food which has the highest energy, bioelectricity, enzymes and bioavailable nutrient content to either maintain or restore your health.
  4. Sleep – you must sleep 9.5 hours with 3.5 of them before midnight.
  5. Exercise – you must exercise 30 minutes every day.
  6. Fasting/Detoxification – you must fast from the normal Standard American Diet (SAD).
  7. Prayer – you must take the time throughout your day to regularly still your mind so you can hear the voice of God spoken into your heart.

So as you can see, it is not 3% but less than 0.1% that are actually living a healthy lifestyle, a total health lifestyle.

Also very important in the observations in this study is that general observation is that people say ‘Nobody does that’, and I can’t do that.” This is a pure and simple untruth. They could do it if they had cancer and were told they have 3 months to live, they could do it if they were diagnosed with heart disease and said they had less than 3 years to live if they didn’t change their lifestyle and diet. They could do it if it were it were a matter of life and death, so if they could do it under any circumstances they could do it under all circumstances. The problem is it calls for change, it calls for work, it calls for sacrifice and a world that is ruled by the flesh-filled old mind never wants to do any of these, so instead it chooses to do what is easy and comfortable not what is more difficult but far more beneficial in the long run. It is up to you. Are you going to obey what the flesh-filled, ego-filled, world-filled mind or are you going to obey the truth-filled heart? The choice is yours but choose wisely because your choice will not only affect you but your family and the generations to come.

Cellular Antioxidant Extends Life Span When In Food Form Not Pills

Mice that produce a specific antioxidant molecule deep within their cells live about 20 percent longer than normal mice, a new study finds.

The study’s authors stressed that this antioxidant isn’t the same as those sold as supplements.

Lead researcher Dr. Peter S. Rabinovitch, a professor of pathology at the University of Washington, in Seattle said the discovery does help validate the “free-radical” theory of aging, which contends that a highly reactive form of oxygen causes aging over the life span by damaging cells in body tissues and organs.

In fact, his team’s experiment appears to support a specific version of the free-radical theory, which holds that the major site of cellular damage lies in the mitochondria, the cell’s energy-producing ‘power plant.’
According to Rabinovitch, the finding suggests that where and how antioxidants are delivered to cells may matter as much as the antioxidants themselves.

None of this should send consumers rushing to health food stores for commercial antioxidants, the Seattle researcher said. A trip to the grocery store might not hurt, however.

“The evidence now for the benefits of oral antioxidant pills is rather weak, to be kind,” Rabinovitch said. “At the same time, there are benefits from a diet high in antioxidant-containing fruits and vegetables.”

Robert A. Floyd, head of the Free Radical Biology and Aging Research Project at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, goes even further in a warning about commercial antioxidant products.

“I would caution about doing anything in excess,” Floyd said. “The whole way free radicals are regulated in the body is very complex. If you put in more antioxidants to stop negative things, you may also stop beneficial things.”

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec Comments on Antioxidants
Studies in recent years have shown how antioxidants like Vitamin A and E not only do not decrease your cancer risk but actually increase it. This study is summed up by the words of leading researcher Dr. Rabinovitch when he stated “the benefit of oral antioxidants pills is rather weak, TO BE KIND,” . . . there are benefits from a diet high in antioxidant containing fruits and vegetables. Remember the words of the father of medicine Hippocrates, “Let your food be your medicine.”

Aspirin, Ibuprofen Might Boost Risk of Certain Breast Cancers

The findings, which appear in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, are based on an analysis of data from 114,460 women enrolled in the California Teachers Study. During follow-up from 1995 to 2001, a total of 2391 women were diagnosed with breast cancer.

Using aspirin or any other NSAID more than once a week had no effect on breast cancer risk, unless such use lasted at least 5 years, Dr. Sarah F. Marshall, from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and colleagues report.

Long-term aspirin use was tied to an increased risk of breast cancer that was not hormone-driven, the researchers found.

There was also evidence that long-term ibuprofen use increased the risk of breast cancer, especially disease that had spread.

The authors estimate that 22 of the breast cancer cases diagnosed might be attributed to aspirin or ibuprofen use.

Daily use of aspirin for at least five years increases the risk of at least one type of breast cancer.

And ibuprofen use daily for five years or more was associated with a 50 percent increased risk of breast cancer, she added.

“These observations warrant further exploration because of the public health impact such readily available NSAIDs may have on breast cancer,” Marshall’s team concludes.

Dr. Keith & Laurie Nemec Comments on  Aspirin, Ibuprofen Might Boost Risk of Certain Breast Cancers
According to this new poll, 53% of Americans are either in acute or chronic pain with the majority of it being back pain. It is actually higher than this when you take into account the fact that those who live in mild pain for a long time do not even realize they are in pain until they are relieved of it and can compare. It is like someone who is sitting in a tub of hot water and after a while it does not seem to be hot until they are taken out of it and then go back into it. It is interesting that the majority of the pain is in the back. This makes sense because 90% of all neck or back pain is visceral in origin which means it comes from organs and glands referring pain into the neck and back when they are inflamed, toxic, deficient and out of balance. Here are some examples:

  • Sinus problems refer pain into the neck.
  • Heart problems into the chest and middle back.
  • Stomach problems in between the shoulder blades.
  • Kidneys imbalance refers pain into the lower back.
  • Intestinal problems also refer pain into the lower back.

So what do you do to get rid of your pain?

We will answer this by stating first what you do not do. You do not take aspirin, Tylenol or any other pain relieving chemicals because:

  1. They increase the risk of certain cancer (as the study shows).
  2. They give you Leaky Gut Syndrome which opens the door to most all disease.

What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

Leaky gut is exactly what it sounds like. The intestinal tract is like a fine screen or mesh, which only lets nutrients of a certain size through. The nutrients then pass into the hepatic portal blood vessels, which bring nutrients to the liver, your chemical detoxification plant.

In a leaky gut condition, the intestinal tract becomes inflamed and the selective permeability (letting only digested food particles through) breaks down. This allows the passage of not only normal digested nutrient building blocks (amino acids, fatty acids and simple sugars from carbohydrates), but also the passage of larger food particles, like larger chain proteins, fats and carbohydrates, and toxins that were never meant to pass through. This can be likened to a window screen. If the screen is functioning properly with no holes in it, air will pass through, but the flies, mosquitoes and other bugs will not. In leaky gut, the intestinal barrier becomes inflamed. Instead of only letting the digested broken down food particles through, the larger food particles and toxins enter causing the immune system to become weakened and over stimulated. This is like the screen that now has tears, making larger holes that allow all types of insects to get through.

This presents a few problems. Larger chain proteins can trigger not only intestinal irritation and inflammation, but also all kinds of allergies, immune and autoimmune problems, and inflammatory joint conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. Too much protein can also cause kidney damage, especially if it is not digested into its amino acid building blocks.

Leaky gut can also result in toxicity, since toxins leak through the “screen” of your intestinal wall (because of the larger holes produced by the inflammation.) These toxins ultimately end up in the liver, your chemical detox plant. Unfortunately, your liver is by then overburdened, and the toxins end up circulating throughout the body, causing havoc wherever they go. If the toxins deposit in the brain, you might have foggy thoughts, possible memory loss and/or confusion, and even the start of neurological disease like multiple sclerosis or Parkinson disease. If the toxins deposit in the joints, you will have arthritic-type pains. If the toxins deposit in organs that produce white blood cells (WBCs), your immune system will be weakened, making you more susceptible to illness, including cancer.

Toxicity is the primary cause of cancer because toxicity is the primary cause of a weakened immune system. Cancer cells form in your body daily, but your WBCs normally destroys them. But when toxicity weakens your immune system, your WBCs can’t do their job, giving cancer cells the opportunity to grow. They eventually form a little colony called a tumor, which WBCs have more trouble destroying. So do not let your defenses down.

What would happen if two armies came to fight, and one side laid down all its weapons? That army would be quickly destroyed. That’s why our immune system is to be highly regarded and guarded at all costs.

Now let us answer the question by saying what you do when you are in pain. You do two things:

  1. Get healthy by living the 7 Basic Steps to Total Health™ everyday. By living these Seven Basic Steps you virtually eliminate all inflammation (which is the root of all disease) and heal all Leaky Gut Syndrome.
  2. You pray. As the poll stated, prayer worked as effectively in reducing pain as prescription drugs. 90% polled said it worked well. 51% said it worked very well.

Prayer as Effective as Prescription Painkillers

Americans have found a no-cost painkiller they say is as effective as prescription drugs: prayer.

More than half of those who responded to a USA TODAY/ABC News/Stanford University Medical Center poll say they use prayer to control pain. Of those, 90% say it worked well, and 51% say “very well.”

Among a dozen therapies, including bed rest, massage and herbal remedies, only prescription drugs were as successful as prayer in easing pain: 89% report that such drugs work well and 51% say “very well.”

This comes as no surprise to preachers and doctors who say they have seen the way personal faith can influence a patient’s reaction to all kinds of pain, psychological or physical.

“Prayer enables you to take your mind and place it in a new perspective,” says family doctor Harold Betton, who also is pastor of New Light Baptist Church in Little Rock. By focusing on prayer, he says, believers reduce stress and gain control over pain.

He says he’s not suggesting anyone should expect miracles, “but you need to utilize what people have: their faith. Let your faith and prayer intercede, and your perception of pain decreases.”

Why that might work is open to debate. Columbia University psychologist Richard Sloan says it has more to do with the power of distraction than the power of prayer.

“If you try to distract yourself by focusing on something else — prayer or something else — I do think it works,” he says. “I don’t think it’s anything special about prayer. It’s any kind of mental activity that serves to distract you from the pain-producing circumstances.”

Hundreds of papers have been published on the possible link between faith and health, but scientifically, “it’s very hard to measure,” says John Tarpley, professor of surgery at Vanderbilt University.

Pain, in particular, is subjective and can be influenced by a variety of factors that are difficult to assess by scientific standards.

“What we have to worry about is the difference between showing association and causation,” says Tarpley, who teaches a class on spirituality and medicine at Vanderbilt.
For some deeply religious people, pain can be redemptive, but faith also can carry an extra burden.

“In African-American belief, (often) pain is part of what we are expected to endure,” says Glenda Hodges, director of a course in spirituality and medicine at Howard University’s College of Medicine.

The feeling is that “if Jesus endured it, I should be able to handle it,” she says. “So if I’m not able to handle the pain, there must be something wrong with the spiritual connection I have with God.”

But “it doesn’t work that way,” says Harold Koenig, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke University. Faith and medicine “work beautifully together.

Just praying alone doesn’t work as well as if you’re (also) taking your morphine.”

Koenig and colleagues reported last month in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease that among sickle cell patients, those who go to church at least once a week had the lowest pain scores.

“People who are more involved with religious organizations seem to be able to cope with stress,” Koenig says.

The question is “what is prayer?”

Let us again say what it is NOT.

It is not the power of the mind or the power of distraction by focusing on something else, as psychologists have said.

It is not the saying of words just to say them hoping if you say enough Our Father’s or Hail Mary’s you will somehow tip the scale and God will decrease your pain.

It is not the power of positive thinking and affirmation which says if I think it enough and say it enough it will happen.

Now here is what prayer IS:

It is being still and listening to the voice of God being spoken into your heart. Prayer is much more “listening to God” than “talking to God”. Your prayers should be more “God show me the way” rather than “God take it away”. Show me the way that this situation in my life will help me to grow and transform into your image. So, when it comes to pain it is not a prayer of “God take away the pain” but “God show me how to grow and mature in the pain. Show me what the pain means (like He might reveal that your pain is because you are not living the Seven Basic Steps to Total Health such as not drinking enough water or eating cooked, toxic animal products or eating refined sugar).

One of the most powerful prayers when you are in pain is the knowing that the pain will usually leave when you no longer need it to leave, which means you have become free from the pain even while you are still in the pain.

The question is this: Would you rather get rid of your pain knowing it will always come back again and again or would you rather become free from the pain, which means it elicits no future or past thinking (anxiety) and no negative emotions (fear, worry, doubt) only bringing peace and joy?

Remember the choice is yours but with the first choice you have a short term gain but a very long term loss, while the second choice might appear to be a short term loss but in actuality is a very, very long term gain.

Mother Passes Stress to Children

Pregnant women who were traumatized by witnessing the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center may have passed on a biological sign of stress to their unborn babies, scientists have stated.

Researchers found the women and their babies had reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which is a sign someone has been affected by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Low levels of cortisol have been observed in the children of Holocaust survivors, but researchers had put them down to living with a depressed parent or hearing stories about what had happened to them.

The latest study suggests however that a mother can pass on low cortisol levels to her unborn child, researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland said.

“This shows that exposure to severe stress in pregnancy is associated not only with PTSD in the mothers but also with the biologic marker of it – low hormone levels in the saliva – in the offspring,” Professor Jonathan Seckl, of the University of Edinburgh, said.

Seckl said it was too early to tell if the children would suffer any ill effects. The researchers plan to follow up the children during their development.
In a study of 38 pregnant women Seckl and Dr Rachel Yehuda, of Mount Sinai School of Medicine, found lower than normal levels of cortisol in saliva samples from the women who suffered PTSD linked to the 9/11 attacks, and in their infants.

The mothers and their babies had lower levels of the hormone than women who did not develop PTSD following the tragedy. Even a year after the children’s birth, babies of stressed mothers had lower levels of cortisol than other children.

“The findings suggest that mechanisms for transgenerational transmission of biologic effects of trauma may have to do with very early parent-child attachments,” Yehuda said.

She added the effects of cortisol programing could even begin before birth.
-Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism

Dr. Keith & Laurie Nemec Comments on Stress:
What you do to yourself you do to your unborn children. This study showed how stress is passed from mother to unborn baby. The stress was measured by levels of a stress hormone called cortisol. Women who had been traumatized by witnessing great tragedy not only had reduced levels of cortisol, a biological sign of stress, but also gave birth to children with lower than normal cortisol levels. The researchers did not know how this would potentially affect the growth and development of the children.

The message is this: What you do to yourself you do to your children—both unborn and born. The most powerful way you can impact your children lives is to change your life.

If you want your child to be at peace, filled with love and joy in their life journey, then you must be at peace and filled with love and joy in your life journey. The more you transform yourself into God’s image and likeness, the more they will be transformed. One of the most powerful ways to impact your children’s lives is change your own by living the Seven Basic Steps to Total Health™ everyday. Once again they are:

If you change your lifestyle, your child will model those changes. When you teach your children by example and out of love you will give them the tools, the ability to be all that God has called them to be in body, mind and Spirit.

Remember when the oxygen is necessary on the plane; they ALWAYS say “put your mask on first before you put your child’s mask on.” Let us learn an important lesson in life from this. What you do to yourself you are doing to your children.

If you see life as stressful, so will they. If you see life as beautiful, so will they. So choose wisely in this journey of life because it not only affects you but also the generations to come.

Future Thoughts Produce Stress, Anxiety and Negative Emotions

People tend to feel more strongly about an experience — whether positive or negative — when they know it is ending, suggesting that deadlines intensify our emotions, according to new study findings.

“The general result was that the emotions got more intense, for the positive as well as the negative,” if people knew they had a deadline, according to study author Dr. Ursina Teuscher of the University of California, San Diego.

Teuscher noted that people tend to place a lot of importance on endings, which may cause them to invest more in experiences they know are ending. As a result, the outcome of those experiences becomes particularly important, which makes the sad or happy feelings they have from the ending extra intense, she noted.

These findings “definitely” suggest that people’s emotions may become heightened as they age, Teuscher noted. Furthermore, the results may explain why some people notice changes in older relatives, she added. Knowing that deadlines can intensify emotions “might help these interactions,” Teuscher said.
-Reuters Health

Dr. Keith & Laurie Nemec Comments on Future Thoughts:
Why do people get more emotional when they feel something is coming to an end?

Why do deadlines intensify emotions?

The reason is simple. People live 95% of their life in the future or the past and 5% in the present moment and much less than 1% are fully aware in the moment.

All this translates into thinking which produces emotions which causes imbalance in the body.

What stresses people? Living in the future or the past. If you think life will be better when I get a better job, meet the right person, make a lot of money, become more powerful, this is an illusion of the mind.

Life is NOW

Living is NOW

Total Health is NOW

When you start living like today is the last day of your physical life, you will start to touch on what this means. There is no stress in the moment because the moment is where God is.

God’s name is I AM—present tense, not I was-past, or I will be-future, but I AM = NOW= THIS present moment.

So this is as good as it gets and this is good when you see the good, when you see God in everything.

When you start living every moment fully, you no longer live for the future or the past, you no longer try to change the moment but instead you change yourself in the moment, you change how you see the moment. This brings peace because you are living in the I AM, instead of living from the I WAS or I WILL BE.

Lack of Sleep and Weight Gain

In a long-term study of middle-aged women, those who slept 5 hours or less each night were 32 percent more likely to gain a significant amount of weight (adding 33 pounds or more) and 15 percent more likely to become obese during 16 years of follow-up than women who slept 7 hours each night.

This level of weight gain — 15 kg, or 33 pounds — is “very clinically significant in terms of risk of diabetes and heart disease,” Dr. Sanjay Patel of Case Western Reserve University told Reuters Health.
Women who slept 6 hours nightly were 12 percent more likely to experience major weight gain and 6 percent more likely to become obese compared with those who slept 7 hours each night.

The 68,183 women in the study provided information in 1986 on their typical night’s sleep and reported their weight every 2 years for 16 years. The findings were presented at the American Thoracic Society’s International Conference.

After accounting for the influence of age and weight at the beginning of the study, women who slept 5 hours or less each night gained about 2.3 pounds more during follow-up than those who slept 7 hours nightly. Women who got 6 hours of shut-eye each night gained 1.5 pounds more than those who slept 7 hours nightly.

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec’s comments on Lack of Sleep and Weight Gain:

In this study, it showed that middle age women who had a lack of sleep, sleeping five hours or less each night, were 32% more like to gain a significant amount of weight, 33 pounds or more. And 15% more likely to become obese during the 16 years of follow up then women who slept 7 hours or more each night. The interesting thing in this study, the more sleep they got, the less weight they gained. And as we have shown in past newsletters, lack of sleep will make you overweight, it will make you have a weakened immune system, increasing the risk of cancer, it will increase your risk of heart disease, it will make you eat more. It has devastating effects on your health.

So, how much is enough sleep?

Research has shown that ideal sleep for human being is 9.5 hours with a minimum of 3.5 before midnight being crucial. Anything but that will cause a progressive weakening of the immune system and throwing the body, mind, emotion complex out of balance. So in this study if they would have compared it to the 9.5 hour norm you would have found those people or women had the perfect or no weight gain, but unfortunately, just a very slight percentage of the American population would get that much sleep, but that’s the amount of sleep that the average American used to get in 1910, now the average is less than 7 hours. So, this again, fits into our model, our Total Health approach which is the Seven Basic Steps to Total Health

Sleep being a critical and crucial effect not only to metabolism but also immune system function in preventing disease. Your plan for getting more sleep, when so many say, there’s no way I can get more sleep, I’m too busy, I have too much to do before I go to bed at night. Well the first plan is just progressively either work your way back a half hour each night until you’re getting at least a minimum of eight hours, or the best way is to wake up earlier. As many people say they cannot sleep if they go to bed early, they just lay there. Then the answer is found in the best time to get up. The earlier you wake, usually the more tired you become, so you would want to go to sleep earlier. So early to bed, early to rise. Remember God designed us to go to bed when the sun goes down, and wake up when the sun comes up.

Stress Can Destroy the Body, Unless the Mind Intervenes

Studies suggest that high levels of stress can lead to obesity and trigger a host of diseases – from heart attacks to ulcers. These and other stress-related diseases sicken millions of people each year in the USA, says brain researcher Bruce McEwen at the Rockefeller University in New York.

Up to 90% of the doctor visits in the USA may be triggered by a stress-related illness, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Elissa Epel, a psychologist at the University of California, San Francisco, and her colleagues turned to women under a crushing burden of stress: mothers of sick kids. The researchers began to peer deep inside their cells to see if stress affected a key part of the chromosome called a telomere.

Telomeres are thought to be markers of aging, says co-author Richard Cawthon of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Telomeres cap the ends of chromosomes, which contain the body’s DNA.

As people get older, this cap gets ground down. When the telomere gets too short to work properly, cells all over the body start to sicken or die — and diseases of old age set in, Cawthon says.

The California researchers found that the longer women had been caring for a child with a serious illness, the shorter the telomere, a finding that suggests rapid aging.

But the toxic stress response wasn’t confined to caregivers: This study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that stress also affected mothers of healthy kids.
Most of the women in this group, the control group, didn’t report burn-out levels of stress. But those that did had the same response: shorter telomeres.

In fact, when the researchers looked only at stressed-out women in either group, they found a dramatic sign of damage. “They had lost the amount of telomeric DNA that one would expect to lose in 10 years of aging,” Epel says.
Researchers Ronald Glaser and Janice Kiecolt-Glaser at Ohio State University turned to a different group of people under stress: caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients, people who often put in 100 hours a week or more on care for someone who has this progressive brain disease.

The team began to look for a damaging substance in the blood called interleukin-6, or Il-6.

Il-6 levels go up as people get older. “But caregivers had levels of Il-6 that increased dramatically,” Glaser says. Overly ramped-up Il-6 might make caregivers vulnerable to diseases common among the elderly, such as arthritis, he says.
The average caregiver was about 70 but had Il-6 levels that looked like those of a 90-year-old, Kiecolt-Glaser says.

Caregivers in the UCSF study who viewed their situation positively didn’t seem to suffer the ill effects of stress, Epel says. A positive outlook on life and the support of friends might help buffer a damaging stress response, she says.

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec’s comments on stress
In this research it showed that the study suggests high levels of stress can lead to obesity and trigger a range of diseases from heart attacks to ulcers. Up to 90% of doctors visits in the United States may be triggered by stress related illness says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. How does stress work and how does it do damage? Very simply it’s a product of the hormonal system. When a person is under stress, they secrete more adrenaline, the fight flight hormone. This hormone enables you to run away from a tiger if a tiger was chasing you for survival. It shunts blood, or decreases blood flow to the digestive tract, it slows the immune system, but it increases blood to the arms and legs. The purpose, you don’t need to digest your food and you don’t need to take the tremendous amount energy and put it into the immune function, when you’re running away from a life threatening tiger. But after you have got out of the reaches of the tiger, then the body goes back into normal lower secretion or no secretion of adrenaline, which increases digestion and decreases blood flow to the arms and legs, and increases immune system response.

Now the problem is when we are running away from tigers, every hour of the day, the tiger can be the stress of job, the stress with family, financial stress, relationship stress, health stress. Any stress that we perceive in our mind will cause us to secrete adrenaline, just the same as if we were running away from a tiger. And if we were running away from a tiger, every waking hour, again our body would become sick, it would produce some disease eventually. Now the fascinating thing of this study showed that the stress effects, actual the DNA, the telomeres are thought to be a marker for aging, according to Richard Cawthon, of the University of Utah. Now the telomere length is related to aging. So as people get older, this cap, the telomere cap, actually gets smaller, and what they found was the longer people are under stress, the shorter the telomere becomes and in one particular California study found that the longer women had been caring for a sick, the shorter the telomere becomes and this suggests that they are aging more rapidly than should be. When they also looked at those under significant stress, they found that as this telomere shortened, the stress would be equivalent to ten years of aging. And this was, again, in mother’s taking care of either sick children, or mother’s stressed out just taking care of their children. The one’s that were stressed out and reported that at a high level where the ones that had the ten years of aging due to the shortening of the telomeric part of the DNA. The last part of the study showed that caregivers taking care of Alzheimer patients had about a twenty year increase in aging of the cells as seen with the shortening of the telomere part of the DNA. So, what does all this tell us? It tells us what stress does to the body, but what it doesn’t tell us is how to avoid this stress. And the basic way to do that is to become healthy. We do this with the 7 Basic Steps to Total Health™.

And when we live a healthy lifestyle, we become more stress resistant physiologically, and mentally and emotionally. The other way we counteract stress is we just see our life in a different view point. If we see negative things as negative things, then that’s what they’ll be. As the saying goes, whether you think you can or you think you cannot, you’re right. So, our outlook and our attitude in life are very, very, key in our health and our healing. So if we see taking care of our children as a stress, and a stressed out situation, then we are seeing it through wrong eyes. If we see ourselves as blessed, because although there’s many challenges with our children, whether sick or well, we are blessed by God to have these children in our lives and these children will teach us many things of this journey in life. Many things that God is trying to show us will be shown through our children. And as we learn the lessons and receive them all as a gift from God, we will transform more into His image and likeness on this planet.  But if we see all things apart from God, as just stresses that are in our path for no reason, then we will either just become negative and negatively affect our health or we will blame God and question why are these there? The important thing to know is, everything has a reason, and the reason is always for growth and transformation.

Low Calorie Diet Beats Exercise for Staying Young

New research suggests that while exercise helps ward off chronic ailments such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease that can shorten a normal lifespan, only cutting calories appears to slow down the primary aging process.

Investigators at Washington University in St. Louis have found that eating a low-calorie, nutritionally balanced diet lowers concentrations of a thyroid hormone known as T3, which controls body temperature, cell metabolism, and it appears the production of free radicals – all of which are important aspects of aging and longevity. Calorie-restriction also decreases levels of the inflammatory protein tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha.

The combination of lower T3 and TNF levels may slow the aging process, Dr. Luigi Fontana and colleagues report in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

In earlier work, Fontana’s group found that both cutting back on calories and exercising protects lab animals from heart disease, diabetes and obesity. However, only cutting back on calories increases the animals’ lifespan. This hints that leanness is the key factor in preventing age-related disease, but that reducing the amount of calories consumed is needed to slow down aging.

In the study, Fontana and colleagues compared thyroid hormone levels of 28 adults consuming a self-imposed calorie-restricted but nutritionally packed diet for 3 to 15 years, with that of 28 sedentary adults consuming a typical Western diet and 28 endurance athletes who were also consuming a Western diet.

The calorie-restricted group consumed about 1,800 calories per day, whereas those on the Western diet took in about 2,700 calories per day.

The researchers observed reduced T3 concentrations only in the calorie-restricted group. Levels of two other thyroid hormones – T4 and TSH – were normal, indicating that the calorie-restricted group was not suffering from thyroid disease called hypothyroidism.

Interestingly, according to the team, body fat levels did not affect T3 levels. This is a key finding, they say, because it suggests that decreased T3 levels are likely related to calorie restriction not changes in body fat.

T3 concentrations were 30 percent lower in the calorie-restricted eaters compared with the exercisers, even though percent body fat was similar between the two groups.

The difference in T3 levels between the calorie-restricted group and the exercise group is “exciting,” said Fontana, “because it suggests that calorie restriction has some specific anti-aging effects that are due to lower energy intake rather than to leanness.”
– Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec’s comments on Low Calorie Diet Tops Exercise for Staying Young.

This fascinating study showed very simply what affects health, healing and aging. The new research showed that although exercise does help very much so, decreases chances of chronic ailments, such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, that can shorten normal life span, only reducing calories, the term is called calorie restriction, appears to slow down the primary aging process. What was found by the researchers, was that as calories are reduced in this study, averages 2700 for a standard American and in this study they decreased it to 1800 calories per day, but nutritionally balanced 1800 calories, as opposed to the western diet which is averaging 2700 calories per day.

What they showed was the indicators of a thyroid hormone T3, which controls body temperature, cell metabolism and it also appears to effect the production of free radicals, which is a very important part of aging and longevity. Calorie restriction lowered the T3 concentration and also calorie restriction decreased the level of inflammation which is measured in an inflammatory protein called Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha. The combination they found of lowered T3 and TNF levels, slows the aging process. Interesting in this study confirms what researchers have found over years of research: the only thing that will increase longevity of everything ever studied, is calorie restriction and as this study confirmed again, part of this is because the thyroid decreases in function but not in an unhealthy way. The study showed it did not send a person into hypothyroidism, but in a healthy on the low side of optimal range. What this does is it slows the metabolism a bit so the body actually ages less rapidly. Past studies have also shown that calorie restriction decreases the insulin secretion by the body which also is a major factor in aging.

What is the easiest way for you to start decreasing calories, or eating a calorie restricted diet? Simple, eat the diet that God designed you to eat which is a living/raw plant based diet. The more vegetables, sprouts, seeds, nuts, avocados and whole grains that one eats in the non cooked state, the calories go down and the nutrients go up. This is what you see in nature. Elephants, Zebras, all animals in nature that eat a living plant based diet, you will not see fat animals in nature. There is no fat because there is no cooked food consumed. Cooking destroys enzymes and increases weight gain by increased calorie intake. Animals in the wild never deal with this because whether they are plant eaters or animal eaters, they eat it in the living state. So, when we take that role, when we eat a more vegetables, sprouts, avocados, seeds and nuts, we’re going to naturally be doing a calorie restricted diet and we’re going to be very full with the concentration of nutrients not only from the protein and fat from seeds and nuts and avocados, but from the fiber.  Fiber fills us and that full feeling causes us to decrease eating, or to stop eating.

Excess Pounds May Raise Ovarian Cancer Risk

Being overweight in young adulthood or later in life may raise a woman’s risk of ovarian cancer, particularly if she’s never had children, researchers have found.

In a study of 2,110 women with and without ovarian cancer, researchers found that those who were relatively heavy, either in recent years or at the age of 18, were more likely than thinner women to develop the disease.

But the relationship between weight and ovarian cancer was strongest among women who’d never given birth. For them, cancer risk climbed in tandem with recent body mass index (BMI), a measure of weight in relation to height.

Among childless women, those who were obese in recent years had 2.5 times the risk of ovarian cancer compared with the thinnest women. The same pattern emerged when the researchers looked at the women’s weight gain since age 18, according to Dr. Julia Greer and her colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

The new findings suggest that in overweight women who’ve had no children, the effects of excess body fat and “incessant” ovulation combine to raise the risk of ovarian cancer, according to the study authors.

The findings offer yet another reason to maintain a healthy weight throughout life. And that goes for all women, whether they’ve had children or not, according to Dr. Greer.

According to American Cancer Society estimates, Greer noted, at least one third of all cancer deaths in the U.S. each year are attributable to excess weight and obesity.

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec’s comments on excessive pounds raise ovarian cancer risks.
This study can be summarized very simply that women that were obese had 2½ times greater risk of ovarian cancer compared to the thinnest women. These findings were stated in the Journal, Cancer. The mechanism behind this is excessive body fat which can raise levels of estrogen in the body.  Estrogen is a pusher driver hormone that increases cell production so this may feed ovarian tumor development. The research in the Journal, Cancer also stated that according to the American Cancer Society, estimates that at least 1/3 of all cancer deaths in the United States each year are attributable to excess of weight and obesity.  This is very important. SO how do we counter act this? You don’t counter act disease by focusing on disease. You do not counter act weight gain or obesity by focusing on your weight, the way you counter act all of the is by looking at the opposite. Instead of trying to get rid of the weight or the disease, the focus is 100% on getting health in body, mind and spirit. The more balanced the body is, the mind and emotions, the more the body is going to go into a natural weight for the body. And how do we do this? With the Seven Basic Steps to Total Health

When you live the 7 Basic Steps, day in and day out you will go to the ideal weight for your body type. So just to review, the earlier a person gets to bed and the more they sleep the more the metabolism balances and the less a person will gain weight. So a healing person is in bed between eight and nine and they are up by six. The next important factor is diet, most importantly we want to eat a living/raw plant based diet, which not only is lowest in calories but highest in nutrients for health and healing. This definitely decreases weight. Then exercise. You want to be doing 30 minutes of aerobic type or cardio vascular type exercise. Cellular exercise, rebounding cellular exercise being the best. This exercise should be done daily. These are three biggest factors in affecting health gain from a physical point of view. From a mental emotion point of view the most important factor is how a person sees themselves and what they see their purpose in life and are they fulfilling that purpose. The more a person is fulfilling the purpose for which God put in their heart the less they will turn to food for pleasure, because HE is their pleasure. The more they do not know what their purpose is, and are not receiving their pleasure from their purpose in life, and from their relationship with HIM who created them, the more they will seek pleasures outside and the most easily accessible pleasure for all Americans is food.

Eat Less and Prevent Brain Degeneration

Eating fewer calories may help prevent the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, researchers reported.

A study in mice suggests a lower-calorie diet can help trigger the production of a protein that protects the brain from the disease, said researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

In the study, the mice in one group were permitted to eat as they wanted, while the other group of mice was fed only 70 percent of that amount.

When the animals were killed six months later, researchers discovered the brains of the calorie-restricted mice held significantly higher levels of an anti-aging protein, SIRT1, the researchers reported in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

That protein has been shown to curtail and reverse the production of plaque in the brain, a typical symptom of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers have found the protein can also enhance the function of a patient’s metabolism, kidneys and liver.

“The real message is that, in an animal model of Alzheimer’s disease, caloric restriction led to the elevation of molecules that are associated with longevity and good health,” said Dr. Giulio Pasinetti, a professor of psychiatry and neuroscience who led the study.
“This may be the reason why caloric restriction may work to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.”

The Mount Sinai study confirms other research that has found a relationship between what and how much people eat and risk for the disease in general.

“The same things that we know are good for your body — particularly your vascular system — are all part of maintaining healthy brain function,” said Dr. Bill Thies, a staff pharmacologist at the Alzheimer’s Association.
– Journal of Biological Chemistry

Dr. Keith & Laurie Nemec’s comments on Eat Less and Prevent Brain Degeneration
In this study, that was published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, it showed that when mice were permitted to eat as much as they wanted, as opposed to the other group which was fed only 70% of that amount, that the animals on the calorie restricted diet had a significantly higher levels of anti aging protein called SRIT1. This protein had been shown to reverse the production of plague in the brain, which is typical in the symptoms of Alzheimer Disease. It also showed that this protein enhances the function of metabolism, kidneys and liver. This is yet another study confirming the power of calorie restriction. Not only increasing longevity, being the only proven mechanism to increase longevity, but also decreasing the formation of all disease in the body whether life threatening disease or not. So what will calorie restriction do for you? It will decrease inflammation in the body and inflammation is the root of all disease. So, not only does it do this for Alzheimer’s, but also will decrease cancer, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disease, all diseases will be decreased when you adopt a calorie restriction lifestyle. And this still goes into the 7 Basic Step. As you live the 7 Basic Step lifestyle you will live the life that God has called you to live. Calorie restriction is the only method that has been proved to increase longevity, but health and healing is not about doing one of the  7 Basic Steps, but all 7 of them, then not only can you increase your longevity, but you can increase not only the number of years, but the life in those years.

Something to contemplate is this, when we see that calorie restriction is the only proven mechanism to increase longevity, we go back to basics how did God design mankind to live? Well He designed mankind to of course exercise. He designed mankind to eat a living/ raw plant diet. He designed mankind to go to bed when the sun goes down and wake up when the sun comes up. He designed mankind to drink water. He designed mankind to breathe the breath of life, His breath fully. He designed mankind to be able to fast, which not only is a form of calorie restriction but in fasting one would detox the body of any accumulative waste products. And He designed the body, mind, emotions, spirit complex to be still and know Him. To live a life of prayer, listening to His voice spoken into their hearts. When you live this life, you will age less rapidly, you will live a much higher quality of life and you will transform more into all that He is created you to be in body, mind and spirit

Red Meat Associated with Pancreatic Cancer

A diet high in red meat appears to raise the risk developing pancreatic cancer, according to researchers.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly cancers, due, in large part, because it is seldom detected at an early, curable stage. Surgical removal offers the only chance for a cure, but only a small percentage of patients are candidates for this therapy. In many cases, removal is not possible when surgery reveals that the cancer has actually spread outside the pancreas.
“Findings from our study,” according to lead investigator Dr. Susanna C. Larsson “suggest that high consumption of red meat is associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer.”
Larsson of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and colleagues conducted a study of more than 61,000 women. The investigators were interested in the possible effects of meat consumption. During 17 years of follow-up, 172 of these women were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Long-term consumption of red meat was associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer.
“These findings,” Larsson concluded, “raise the possibility that individuals may lower their risk of pancreatic cancer by reducing red meat consumption.”
– International Journal of Cancer

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec’s comments on red meat associated with pancreatic cancer.

This study published in the International Journal of Cancer, showed that as red meat increases in the diet, the risk of developing one of the most deadly cancers, pancreatic cancer, increases also. Other studies have confirmed the red meat and colon cancer connection.  This should not come as a surprise to us because all studies have shown that the consumption of red meat and animal products in general, increase disease risk. Red meat being one of the highest risks of all. So as the United States population adopts more and more of a plant based diet of raw vegetables, sprouts, seeds, nuts, avocados and when we eat these more and more we will see our levels of health increase and levels of disease decrease. An important alternative cancer treatment is eating a plant based diet. And as we follow the Seven Basic Steps to Total Health™ We will see our body, our mind and our emotions balance as one as God created them to be.

Vegetables Lower Lymphoma Cancer Risk

Eating plenty of leafy greens, broccoli and brussels sprouts may help ward off the blood cancer non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer, research findings suggest.

In a study of more than 800 U.S. adults with and without non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), researchers found that those who ate the most vegetables had a 42 percent lower risk of the cancer than those with the lowest intakes.

In particular, leafy greens like spinach and kale, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, brussels sprouts and cauliflower, seemed to be protective.

Similarly, the study found, two nutrients found in green vegetables — lutein and zeaxanthin — were related to a lower NHL risk.
The antioxidant activity of these vegetables and nutrients explains the connection, said study co-author Dr. James R. Cerhan of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota.

Antioxidants help protect cells from such damage by neutralizing molecules called reactive oxygen species. These substances are byproducts of normal body processes, as well as environmental exposures like cigarette smoke, and in excess they can damage body tissue and lead to disease.

The new findings suggest “yet another benefit” of eating your vegetables, according to Cerhan.

Vegetables and fruits are probably the best way to get antioxidants, he said, because these foods have a host of other nutrients that may all work together to bestow health benefits.

The study included 466 adults with NHL who were enrolled in a national cancer registry, along with 391 cancer-free adults who were matched to patients by age, race and sex. Both groups answered questions about their diet and other health and lifestyle factors.
In general, those who ate more than 20 servings of vegetables a week had a 42 percent lower risk of NHL than those who ate eight weekly servings or fewer. When the researchers looked at specific nutrients, lutein and zeaxanthin stood out; people with the highest intakes were about half as likely as those with the lowest to develop NHL.
– American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec’s comments on vegetables, antioxidants may lower lymphoma risks.
As stated in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, this study showed that researchers found that those who ate the most vegetables had a 42% lower risk of cancer, than those who ate the lowest intakes. Diet is a key alternative cancer treatment. In particularly feed greens, like spinach and kale, and the cruciferous  vegetables like broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, seemed to be protective. The important thing this study was showing was that as we get back to basics, the diet God designed us to eat, which is a living/raw plant based diet, the more disease protective from all diseases, not just cancer but also heart disease, diabetes, auto immune disease we become.

All diseases will decrease as we eat the diet we were designed to eat, one that was not cooked, one that was living or raw, living means still growing, this is seeds, nuts, sprouted material, sprouts, raw meaning not cooked, but not growing. This would be your vegetables, the foods that have been taken away from their life source, but still have high enzyme contents in them because they have never been processed through heat. Any heat over 105°F. destroys enzyme activity and decreases the nutrients in the food source and turns it more into calories than nutrients for health and healing. So, let us just add this in our protocol to attain total health.

So as we live the 7 Basic Steps and one of them the diet, the food, is a living raw plant based diet, high in vegetables, high in sprouted material, high in bioenergy, bioelectricity, enzymes and the nutrients, the vitamins and minerals and antioxidants and phytochemicals that have not been destroyed by heat, this is the diet that will keep us at the highest level of health, decrease our cancer risk and decrease our risk of all diseases and increase our longevity.

Turn Off the Lights

Several large population studies, have shown a clear link between a woman’s exposure to light at night and breast cancer. A similar link has been shown with prostate cancer in men. The risk is greatly increased for:

  1. Those who frequently do not go to sleep until after 1:30 a.m.
  2. Those who have the brightest bedrooms.
  3. Late-night shift workers (and the longer they work nights, the greater the risk).

The study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute concludes that this is the result of a chronic suppression of melatonin – an anti-cancer hormone that is produced by the body only in the dark.
– Journal of the National Cancer Institute

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec’s comments on turn off the lights.

Research published by the National Cancer Institute conclude that when people do not get enough sleep, or they are exposed to light when they sleep, it results in a chronic suppression of melatonin, an anti cancer hormone that is produced by the body only in dark. What they found was the risk is greatest for those who don’t go to sleep until very late, especially after 1:30 a.m. in the morning, those who have any light in their bedrooms, and late night shift workers, the longer they work nights, the greater the risks.

The important thing is, how do we counter act this? We counter act this by number one following the sleep guidelines. Sleep studies have shown the number of hours of sleep ideal for health and healing in a human being is 9.5 hours, with at least 3.5 before midnight. What does that mean? It means you are in bed by between 8:00 and 9:00 and you wake up at 6:00. Now for many you will say this is unrealistic, so what I say to you is get to bed as early as you can and wake up as early as you can and start making changes even if it just thirty minutes or fifteen minutes earlier each night or when you can. The other thing is critical make sure your bedroom is dark. Do not have any lights on, any night lights, any lights at all that are perceivable and also if light comes in from the outside from the streetlights, purchase shades that have light blocking, which means they do not permit any light to come through the shade. Another important thing to affect health and healing are the Seven Basic Steps to Total Health

Now, if a person was on a night shift and they could not switch their job, they can still balance their health at a higher level if they do the other 6 of the 7 Basic Steps. The average American breaks most all of them, so in all these studies, we are taking typical Americans that are breaking all the steps. If you can live 6 of those 7 steps at a high level, the body will absorb that 7 steps not being ideal, so that recommendation is when you cannot sleep 9.5 hours or when you have to work a late night shift, make sure you are living the other 6 of the 7 Basic Steps to Total Health at the highest level you possibly can.

Pesticides Could Raise Parkinson’s Risk

Exposure to pesticides, may boost the long-term risk for developing Parkinson’s disease by 70 percent, a new study suggests.

These findings do back up earlier animal studies linking pesticide exposure to motor function abnormalities and lower levels of the brain neurotransmitter dopamine. Declines in dopamine have long been associated with Parkinson’s.
“This is the first large human study that shows that exposure to pesticide is associated with a higher incidence of Parkinson’s,” said study lead author Dr. Alberto Ascherio, associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

The researchers studied 413 participants who were diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Exposed patients were twice as likely to be blue-collar workers and 14 times more likely to work as either a farmer, rancher, or fisherman.

However, the same risk of disease was found between patients who experienced exposure because of their work, such as farmers, and those who came into contact with the chemicals because of home or garden use.
The Harvard team found that, regardless of occupation, pesticide exposure boosted long-term Parkinson’s risk by 70 percent over the long-term.
-Annals of Neurology.

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec’s comments on pesticides could raise Parkinson’s risk.
This study which was published in the Annals of Neurology was the first to show that exposure to pesticides may increase long term risk for developing Parkinson’s Disease by 70%, and was the first large human study that showed exposure to pesticides is associated with higher incidences of Parkinson’s according to lead author.  Another interesting note in the study was exposure was 14 times more likely to be found in workers that either were farmers, ranchers or fishermen.  Equally important as a risk factor was the home and garden pesticides that we are putting on our lawns and in our gardens. These chemicals are weakening our immune systems and increasing the risk of all types of diseases and as this study confirms Parkinson’s Disease, but also know that these chemicals will also increase our to immune suppressive diseases like cancer. The most alternative cancer treatment is prevention. What’s the answer? Very simply, go natural.

You can find by planting certain herbs in your garden they repel insects. By not needing to have a green, green lawn but tolerating some dandelions you might just save your life. Also chemicals enter your body by the food you eat so buy organic food whenever possible, eat a plant based diet instead of an animal based diet, animal concentrate chemicals, toxins and hormones in their fat tissue. You don’t have a risk of this when you are eating plant material. And you especially have no risk at all when you eat plant material that is organic. So in comparing organic plant material to eating animal products, there’s up to a thousand times greater toxins, chemicals, in the animal sources. So the more chemicals and toxins that  go into the body, the higher the risks of all diseases. So if one adopts the 7 Basics Steps to Total Health Lifestyle, one becomes more disease protective in all areas.

Placebos Work Better Than Medication

Dr. Scott H. Simpson of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and his team analyzed the results of 21 studies that included a total of 46,847 people, and report the results in the British Medical Journal. They found that participants who took an active medication regularly were 44% less likely to die during the course of a study than those who did not, while people who adhered to recommendations for taking placebo had a 45% lower risk of death.

Three of the studies were of medications later found to be harmful, and the researchers found that people who took these dangerous drugs regularly had a three-fold greater mortality risk. This suggests, Simpson said, that “we can look at people that have very good adherence versus those that have very poor adherence and see if there’s difference in the rate of those adverse effects, that can tell us something about the harmful effects of the drug.”

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec’s comments on placebos more healing than medications.
This study reported in the British Medical Journal showed something that should be shouted from the rooftops, should be stated every American should know the results of this study. They found that participants that took an active medication regularly were 44% less likely to die during the course of the study than those that did who did not. That’s not the important part. The important part was this, while people who adhered to recommended for taking the placebo, a placebo is nothing. It is an inert substance in a capsule so a person thinks they are taking something that will help their health. They had a 45% lower risk of death. Let me state this again, taking drugs and medications which toxify the liver, which cause undo stress and many side effects and many long term health problems, had a greater likelihood to die than those who took nothing. Those who took a placebo, and inert substance in a capsule that they thought they were taking something to help their health. This shows the power of the mind. First of all, because when you believe in something it works, even if nothing is in there. But the most important thing is, in our overall medicated society which is causing increased risk of death and increased toxicity in the system which decreases ability to live life in the full due to more symptoms, conditions and diseases in the body, and actual nothing pill with nothing in it had a greater success rate by 1% than taking the medication. This needs to be understood by America.

When we live these steps day in and day out as a lifestyle, we can live a healthy full life as God designed us to live. Medication should only be used when utmost necessary in emergency situations. When people are overmedicated which a majority of all Americans are, as this study showed, if they would just take nothing and think that the nothing in that capsule was doing them good, they would do better than taking a toxic medication.

European Study Supports Hair Dye-Lymphoma Link

Using hair dye may increase the risk of a type of cancer known as lymphoma, a European study shows.

Dr. Silvia de Sanjose of the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona and colleagues published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

The researchers found an overall 19 percent increased risk of lymphoma among people who reported coloring their hair. The increased risk was 26 percent among those who used hair dye 12 or more times a year.

People who began coloring their hair before 1980 showed a 37 percent increased lymphoma risk, while those who had only dyed their hair before 1980, but not afterwards, showed a 62 percent increased risk.

Based on the findings, de Sanjose and her team calculate that roughly 10 percent of lymphomas in women could be due to the use of hair dye.

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec’s comments on studies supports hair dye lymphoma link.

In this study published by the American Journal of Epidemiology, it showed that researchers found an overall 19% risk of lymphoma among people who reported coloring their hair. The increased risk was 26% among those who used hair dye 12 times or more a year. People who began coloring their hair before 1980 showed a 37% increase lymphoma risk. The summary of the report showed roughly 10% of lymphomas in women could be due to the use of hair dyes. Now what we want to state in this is very simply, not to just pin point one thing in a disease, but all the things that link to disease, in this we want to state chemicals and toxins entering the system. Now these chemicals and toxins are of course entering through the hair follicles. They can be entering through chemicals in the food, in the water, in the air, as we stated it could be pesticides. Any chemical or toxin entering the system is going to weaken the immune system and increase the risk of cancer and all diseases. So the answer is, the Seven Basic Steps to Total Health™, as detailed below:

  1. Air – you are not deep diaphragm breathing to oxygenate your body.
  2. Water – you are not drinking 32 ounces of distilled water per 50/lbs per body weight per day.
  3. Food – you are not consuming a diet of living/raw plant food which has the highest energy, bioelectricity, enzymes and bioavailable nutrient content to either maintain or restore your health.
  4. Sleep – you are not sleeping 9.5 hours with 3.5 of them before midnight.
  5. Exercise – you are not exercising 30 minutes every day.
  6. Fasting – you are not fasting from the normal Standard American Diet (SAD).
  7. Prayer – you are taking the time throughout your day to regularly still your mind so you can hear the voice of God spoken into your heart.

When we live the 7 Basic Steps to Total Health day in and day out and we actively or proactively avoid chemical intake into our body through air, food, water and things that contact our skin and hair, remember anything that is on your skin within 30 seconds is in your blood stream. So anything you put on your scalp, your hair, your skin, lotions, chemicals of any type can increase the risk of disease. Your general rule is this, if it goes on your skin you should be able to eat it, because it is entering into the blood and into the cells anyway, so if we live by this general rule, if we eat organic fruits and vegetables, if we’re eating plant based diets, if all of our materials are organic we decrease all the chemical intake from those sources. If our water is distilled, water that has been post carbon filtered, we reverse all chemical intake from that source, and lastly is our air.  We cannot decrease the chemical content in the air in the cities we live in, in a short period of time, but what we can do is put air purification units in our homes to make that air as pure as possible.

Sleep Strengthens Memory and Immune System

Sleep Strengthens MemorySleep seems critical to memory, particularly the ability to recall recently learned fact and events, researchers report.

“We sought to explore whether sleep has any impact on memory consolidation,” said lead researcher Dr. Jeffrey M. Ellenbogen, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School’s Center for Sleep and Cognition. “Specifically, the type of memory for facts and events in time.”

“Sleep had a benefit for the consolidation and strengthening of memory,” Ellenbogen said. “It actively does so; it’s not a passive process. The brain actively engages memories and leads them to be strengthened the next day, and it’s a long-lasting benefit. The benefit was even larger than we were anticipating.”

Given these findings, the researchers believe that sleep is important to building and maintaining memories. “Sleep is not an inactive state. That’s an obsolete concept,” Ellenbogen said. “The brain is doing lots of things during sleep, including consolidating memories. So you need to get it on a regular basis in order to maximize memory.”

One expert thinks this study shows that sleep is important in learning.

“Sleep specialists still do not know the overarching purpose of sleep,” said Dr. Robert D. Vorona, an associate professor in the Division of Sleep Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School, in Norfolk. “However, we do know that insufficient sleep is associated with negative alterations in both mood and performance.”

“This study suggests that parents of students would do well to recommend that their children both study hard and obtain sufficient sleep in order to maximize their academic performance,” he added.

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec’s comments on Sleep Strengthens Memory and Immune System:

This study which was published in the issue Current Biology, showed that sleep seems critical to memory particularly the ability to recall recently learned facts and events, the researched showed. Also had indications that not only memory, but just general learning which this would support the fact that parents should make sure that children should get enough sleep for their academic performances. As we know it is critical for health and healing and as we have stated before.  If we don’t get enough sleep, we become more disease prone. We also tend to become more prone to being overweight, have weakened immune systems, and are more at increased risk at cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

Sleep is vital to your immune system and your immune system is what prevents you from getting cancer. All aspects of our health decrease when we don’t get enough sleep, and that is as close to 3.5 hours before midnight and 6 hours after midnight. This study was just confirming the fact that it not only affects your physical body, lack of sleep affects your mind, it affects your memory and it affects your ability to learn. So, if we just adopt the Seven Basic Steps to Total Health™ and understand the importance of sleep as one of those 7 Basic Steps; we will be as healthy as we were designed to be.

Also remember, if for any reason one of these areas have to be decreased, like sleep, whether you are a night shift worker, or someone that has demands that they just can’t get the 9.5 hours of sleep, the more hours before midnight you get, it has a double effect on health and healing of the body, also if the sleep has to be decreased short term, if you can maximize the other 6 of the 7 Basic Steps this will help the body absorb the stress from the lack of sleep and minimize the chances of it going into more symptoms, conditions or diseases.

Acetaminophen Use Could Trigger Liver Damage

Even high-normal doses of the painkiller in Tylenol might be harmful, study suggests

In a new study, people who repeatedly took the maximum recommended daily dose of acetaminophen developed abnormalities in blood tests that can be a signal for liver damage.
For this study, 145 healthy adults each received either a placebo, one of three acetaminophen/opioid combinations, or acetaminophen alone for 14 days. Each active treatment included 4 grams of acetaminophen daily, the maximum recommended daily dosage.
None of the patients in the placebo group had a maximum aminotransferase (ALT and AST) tests used to measure levels of specific liver enzymes, measurement of more than 3 times the upper limit of normal.
However, in the four treatment groups, 31 percent to 44 percent of patients had a maximum ALT of more than three times the upper limits of normal. Those in the acetaminophen-alone group had a similar elevation, suggesting that the opioid had nothing to do with the effect.

Dr. Keith and Laurie Nemec’s comments on acetaminophen triggers liver damage.

What this showed in this study which was done at the University of North Carolina, Chappell Hill, that people who repeatedly took the maximum recommended daily dose of acetaminophen, which this is Tylenol brand, those type of medications, develop abnormalities in the blood test that can be a signal for liver damage. Importance of this study is very simply this, when we put anything unnatural in our body that was not designed to be there it is going to have a toxic affect to some extent. All these pain killers whether aspirin, acetaminophen, Cox 2 inhibitors, all these pain killers do have very significant side effects, as this study showed, this simple amount of just taking acetaminophen can cause liver damage. Why liver damage? Because your liver is the organ that detoxifies your body. Any chemical, drug, medication, anything that is not supposed to be in there, has to be detoxified by the liver. And the liver spends quite a bit of time, just taking care of the standard toxins that come from normal break down of food, break down of cellular metabolism. So, the endotoxins that come from the inside of the body have to be broken down. Now when we are adding exotoxins, which is from the outside of the body, this is from the air, water and food, eating food with chemical on it, injected hormones, concentrated toxins, as we up the food chain and eat animal products, eating highly sprayed plant material, non organic plant material, all this increases the chemical load, the toxic load, the liver has to deal with. So, all that combined is enough that the liver cannot keep up with it and when we add this on top of this adding more chemicals in the form of acetaminophen it just pushes it over the top and the liver will become damaged. It is important to know that the liver is the first organ to go out of balance before cancer develops so a primary alternative cancer treatment is necessary to keep the liver healthy. Also make sure you live the Seven Basic Steps to Total Health
